The clinical laboratory at Krefting Research Centre

West Sweden Asthma Study (WSAS) is being conducted at Krefting Research Centre’s clinical laboratory. The laboratory, established more than 10 years ago, has previously participated in major clinical trials, often in collaboration with the pharmaceutical industry.
Activities are now focusing on phenotyping of asthma and the laboratory has advanced equipment for lung function measurement (spiro meter and” body-box”), measurement of methacholine sensitivity, lung diffusion capacity and measurement of exhaled nitric oxide (NO - an inflammation marker).
Furthermore, various types of detailed interviews with patients and allergy testing are also performed.
The laboratory, where six research nurses/ biomedical analysts are working, has the capacity to examine around 1 000 patients per year with detailed phenotyping. Each visit takes about 3 hours.
